There are a variety of options for dental veneers depending on your needs, the type of look you want, your budget, and more.
Veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment that can be used to fix imperfections such as chipped teeth, gaps in teeth, or even stained and discoloured teeth. Veneers mimic the appearance of natural teeth whilst improving their colour, shape, size or length. Dental veneers are popular for restoring the strength and appearance of teeth that may be crooked, poorly shaped, gapped, discoloured, chipped, cracked or broken.
Dental veneers are a great option for correcting a variety of problems with teeth, particularly cosmetic issues.
Tooth veneers are ideal for fixing:
Getting dental veneers can be a great option if you have slightly crooked teeth but don’t want to endure the pain of braces, or the aesthetics of having braces as an adult.
At High Street Dental Practice we offer both porcelain veneers and composite veneers, each having their unique advantages. Porcelain veneers tend to be stronger, glossy and have a longer colour stability (up to 15 years), while composite veneers although costing less have a colour stability for only 4 years. Our veneers are only about half a millimeter thick (0.5mm), meaning they can be applied with minimum damage to existing teeth.
Most people with good oral hygiene and healthy gum tissue can consider veneers if they don’t like the look of their teeth or overall smile. You’ll need to have healthy teeth and gums to qualify for dental veneers, so it’s important for us to assess the condition of your teeth first. If you are struggling with gum disease, oral infections, or tooth decay, you can be approved for veneers once successfully treated.
As with any dental treatment, there may be some discomfort during the procedure for veneers. You may experience some discomfort when the tooth enamel is removed, however the placement of both porcelain and composite veneers is typically pain-free. For porcelain veneers, the dentist will administer local anaesthetic to numb your tooth before removing any enamel. Afterwards, your gums and jaw may be tender and sore for several days or a week while you adjust to your newly veneered teeth.
Caring for your veneers is similar to taking care of your own teeth in terms of brushing, flossing, and other dental hygiene such as regular cleanings, but there are a few things to think about. You’ll need to be careful eating hard, tough, or chewy foods, especially at first, and you should always wear a mouthguard when playing contact sport. Wearing a retainer or splint at night to protect your veneers is also recommended if you grind your teeth. Red wine, coffee, and other foods or drinks should be consumed in moderation, as they can stain your tooth veneers.
